Very sadly, we cannot adopt anymore cats or kittens as we have no sanctuary at present and our house is full with 47 cats and kittens. With more donations and a sanctuary, we could adopt a lot more. But this is not the case at present.
Today – according to our local expert
vet Mihalis Kontrafouris – there is an
overpopulation of street cats leading to
horrific living conditions in Leros a
Greek island of the Dodecanese. Around
8000 cats and kittens struggle to
survive.
Some locals throw new-born kittens in the rubbish bins, and I discovered in my bin
the body of one of my neighbour’s cats run over by a car. The life span of a street
cat in Leros is around 1 to 2 years.

Our Community
Apart from David and I, our team comprises of 3 locals: Effi, takes care of our 30-rescue house and garden cats.
Irini is in charge of the 15 feeding stations spread around the little town of Lakki where we live.
She provides twice a day good quality food for around 200 cats.
Poppy and her husband Nikitas have been assisting us with catching street cats to be sterilised.

Our Causes
We are at a crucial time where, without donations, we will not be able to sustain our commitment to the ever-growing street cat population within our 16 stations. Despite a weekly sterilisation programme, the street cat population keeps growing.
New kittens are born with terrible diseases and – for lack of funds – we cannot provide medical treatment for all of them.
We are now starting an adoption programme as a matter of urgency. The Greek winter which will kill 70% of the kittens in the next few weeks has already been quite harsh.
Spring is not much better because all the lady cats are pregnant, even kittens as early as 4 months with wombs bigger than the kitten itself. We just saved street cat Iphigenia from a horrible death.

Donation Program
1. Adoption fees
2. Sponsorship donation
Sponsor a new home for a kitten: some good homes need help to cover the cost of vaccinations, pet passport and transport – if you can help with that, let us know. If you wish, we’ll put you in touch with the kitten’s new family.
3. General donation to the adoption program

Catching and sterilising cats every Tuesday
If 10 people donate 6 euros we can sterilise a boy cat;
If 10 people donate 8 euros we can sterilise a girl.
Survival Medical Treatment For Sick Cats and Kittens
If 10 people each give 2. 1/2 euros we can give a sick cat a two-week antibiotic – save its life and sometimes its eye.
If 10 people each give 5 euros, we can give 2 healthy cats an anti-pneumonia vaccine.
Food – ending Starvation
If 10 people each donate 4. 1/2 euros we can give 200 cats dry-food for a week.
If 100 people each donate 5. 1/2 euros we can give 200 cats canned food for 1 month.
Adopt a Cat
Adopt a kitten or a cat. If it is love at first sight we’ll tell you what it costs to vaccinate,
document and transport your kitten or cat.

Hebe
6 months
Hebe is a wonderful girl, very gentle, loves cuddles. She likes to sleep in bed with her adopted mummy. She has a very sunny personality. She is very social and is the glue to all the other kittens. Everyone loves her and the boys want to be her lover but as she has been sterilized, she politely declines like a true lady.

Ares
7 months
Is a real Tom boy, he is full of mischief and has a naughty twinkle in his eyes. From a litter of four with 2 brothers and a sister, he is the dominant cat. He loves wet food and tries to steal the food from other cats by extending his telescopic leg and clawing the food out of the bowls. Very ingenious!

Gaia
5 months
Gaia was in a very bad way when we rescued her from one of our feeding stations. She had severe pneumonia. She was barely 4 months. Apart from a 2-week antibiotic injection, we had to give her antibiotic pills for 10m days and that was really distressing for her. Then a month later, we had to sterilize her as she came into
In the main town of Lakki we feed,
twice a day, 150 to 200 cats and kittens
through our dedicated feeding stations.
