If you currently live outside Greece and you would be interested in working with cats on one of the most authentic islands in the Dodecanese, we can always use help at The Leros Cat Foundation.
We are primarily looking for someone with an education in animal health, such as veterinary students, retired vets, or animal nurses, aged, between 23 and 75. We will also consider others with experience and knowledge about cats and kittens.
We expect you to have a genuine interest in making a difference for the cats.
You will be surrounded by them, and they will seek your attention. The work can be hard, and you will have to get down on your knees to clean the litter trays cages and replenish the food bowls and waters. You will have to cope with diarrhoea, vomiting and lots of dirty litter boxes every day.
You may also see and care for sick and wounded cats. You must therefore be mature, reliable, physically and mentally fit. We expect you to co-operate, but also to be independent.
The main tasks will be to assist us with the daily care of the cats, to check on them and give them love and attention. You will feed the cats and kittens, clean the cages and litter boxes, help with medications and eye care/ear care. You will also help us keeping the indoor and outdoor areas of the house and clean, tidy and safe. We expect you to help us 5 to 6 hours a day, 7 days a week. The rest of the time will be at your disposal.
The house has a large annexe with two double bedrooms each with an ensuite bathroom and there is also a shared drawing-room with internet connection. The minimum length of stay is three weeks, preferably longer, as both we and the cats need continuity.
Since you will be living among the cats, we expect you to be responsible and sober. As you know, the cats are sensitive beings and the house and garden belong to them. In return for your respect, they will shower you with love and affection.
We have 55 cats in the house with 5 Petkit state of the art litters. The Petkit litters are the latest technology, they process pees and poos automatically every time a cat uses them.
On top of this we have 5 traditional cats litter boxes. All cat litter boxes machine and traditional are thoroughly cleaned once a day in the morning between 9 and 11.00, then around 17.00, plus 22.00.
We also have around 25 garden cats, these have 3 dedicated feeding stations that need cleaning every other day plus their feeding spot in the laundry.
The poos in the garden need to be cleared every other day.
The house cats have automatic Petkit feeding dispenses but we do a manual feed around 16.30/17.00 as some of the house cats must return to the house for the night.
